It has long been our responsibility to take initiative actions towards Sustainable Development Goals, especially climate issues. However youth these days are rather ignorant on climate changes, far below the level of its severance. SDG, established last year had included and diversified the goals on climate changes, showing its importance. As the president Barack Obama once said, we are the first generation to feel the effect of climate change and the last generation who can do something about it. Therefore, increasing the awareness and taking appropriate measures accordingly before the next generation is a pivotal role we must play. Our job this summer in New York is to take that one more step in making this Earth better, leaving this planet healthy for our descendants.

Hello, I am Hyojeong. It is honor to be one of the college leaders at UN as representatives of Korea. I still remember the moment when I visited the Headquarters in New York. So I am so excited to have an opportunity to interact with UN officials and diplomats, to get hands-on experiences. And I believe this opportunity widen my perspective as a global citizen and become the great first step toward my future career.

Hi, everyone. It is a great honor to be part of the WFUNA program, participating as one of the student representatives from Korea University. I have always been interested in studying international politics and economics, which makes this a great opportunity to see how countries cooperate with each other, while sometimes having conflicting views. Through actively discussing and interacting with the other college representatives, not only from Korea but also from many different countries, I hope to widen my perspectives on international issues and shape my future plans.

It is an honor to be selected as one of the representatives of Korea. When I served as a sergeant of Force Recon in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps, I learned and saw secret information about North Korea. As a result, I became very interested in the Issues particularly regarding North Korea but also other conflicts going on around the world. And, the experience led me to participate in NMUN as a delegate at the UN headquarters in New York to learn more about them, and pursue my dream of working at an international organization to help make the world a better place. By participating in the program held by WFUNA, I strongly believe that I can further broaden my perspectives by gaining more understanding of how the U.N. and its many agencies conduct their work.

I have experience regarding the topic of Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, and I am especially interested in protecting women's rights in situations like war or terror, where women's rights are extremely endangered. I haven’t had a chance to learn much about the system of UN, but I am willing to learn more about this most influential organization. Thank you.

Won Jun Jo (조원준)

MIT
Chemical Engineering / Mechanical Engineering

I am a Ph.D. candidate in Chemical Engineering at MIT. My most delightful memories are whenever I have helped other people. My values drive me to make monthly donations for African children, participate in free meal service for the homeless almost every Saturday, and study Chemical Engineering – a most pragmatic discipline, closely related to everybody’s daily life as well as the world-wide economy.

I obtained powerful inspiration and momentum for my future career when I was in Lebanon as a UN peacekeeper, I saw how global warming ruined nature. Severe drought and sudden sea-level rise devastated the broad-scale ecosystem on the shores of the Mediterranean, thereby harshly damaging many Lebanese lives. While working for the UN Environment Program, I learned the climate crisis is a truly man-made planetary emergency caused by the long-lasting carbon economy. Thus, before the emergency turns into an irreversible tragedy, we must immediately launch countermeasures of a scope, scale, and speed beyond what we have done in the past. Otherwise, all creatures on the planet will be threatened with extinction.

In this regard, I am conducting my Ph.D. studies on solar energy conversion via photovoltaics and photocatalysis in order to suppress and finally stop global warming.

We all are, in 21st century, to carefully examine our life. That is, in order to seek harmony and common wellness of global society, each of us has to take responsibility to comprehend ways to respect, understand, trust, love, and whatnot.
I believe this program is one of the conducive steps to the examined life. Here, I believe WFUNA college leaders are to acquire valuable experiences which will contribute to the bright future. I am more than glad to participate this time and willing to do my best.

Hi, my name is Hong Seok Kim, attending Hanyang University in South Korea. I am currently majoring in Economics and Finance. It is a great opportunity for me to meet people who are eager to talk about problems occurring around the world. I believe that students from different nations have different insights. This is the reason I have applied for this program, where thought-provoking conversations will be available. When Leonardo DiCaprio won his first Oscar Award, he said he will not take this prize for granted. Yet he brought up the words about humanities and the underprivileged. His words would have act as a catalyst in stimulating voices of people fighting for the rights around the world. It would be an honor if I could have a chance to speak up for the underprivileged so as to arouse serious problems we are facing. I’m sure we will have a great time in New York and excited to see all of you in August.

Ji Won Yang (양지원)

Sookmyung Women's University
Political Science & International Relations / Economics

Hi, I am Jiwon Yang from Sookmyung women's university, majoring in Political Science and Economics. I am 23 years old and it is a full honor for me to meet great students through Wfuna UN college leaders. Recently, I am interested in governance, conflicts and Participatory development. I personally believe that governance is the most fundamental element for further economic and social development. Also, understanding governance in many different countries will help them to understand their ongoing conflicts. Not only that, I believe that there is no perfect development model. Every country will have their own development models because countries usually have heterogenous cultures and history. Moreover, I think that participatory development from the ground up should be the overall direction of development to understand the need from the locals.
Finally, I am so excited to meet many great students with similar or slightly different opinions to share. Also, I will try my best to become a reliable and passionate president and thank you for all your participation.

Chang Hyun Yoo (유창현)

Highly anticipating the opportunity. Hoping to not merely take something away from the experience on a personal scale, but also contribute in earnest to the global cause. Also believe that this program presents a terrific platform to demonstrate the international capacity of Korean students.
